The controversial implementation of the USA Patriot Act has lead to much heated debate throughout American society. Those that support the act believe that since its passage in October 2001, the Patriot Act has been both a critical and powerful force in preventing violent acts of terrorism in the United States. Those in opposition feel that its establishment has eroded the system of checks and balances and transformed surveillance laws to facilitate a government that has the power to spy on its citizens. Among the most avid and vocal supporters of the act are the Bush administration and various politicians. Many citizens and organization, like the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), challenge the Patriot Act urging for revisions and passing resolutions that contest the broad authority granted to governmental agencies.
